Local company produces complex stair pans
for the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere

BUFFALO, NY – When the developers of 432 Park Avenue staged a topping-out ceremony on Friday, October 10, Buffalo’s cheers were as loud as the ones in New York. That’s because local company Eberl Iron Works turned out to be the only source able to fabricate stair pans to meet the structure’s unique and difficult specifications.

According to the website for 432 Park, its 1,396-foot height makes it “the tallest residential tower in the Western Hemisphere.” Its looming presence in the New York skyline has drawn widespread attention.
Seeking to maximize usable space in the 93’ by 93’ building footprint, builders needed to construct steps whose pitch was different from the usual. The stair design required steel pans with a unique configuration. Only Eberl Iron Works had both the ability and the willingness to tackle such a complex project.

“Because of our expertise, we were the best option,” said John C. Eberl, chief executive officer. “Typical stair pans have only three bends, but these needed seven – that’s why the job was so complicated.” Over the past year, close to 5,000 steel stair pans were cut, bent, painted, packaged and shipped from the company’s Sycamore Street facility.

Family-owned Eberl Iron Works celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2013. From its beginnings as a small welding shop, the manufacturer has grown and diversified to comprise five divisions: Metal Fabrication Services, Unistrut Buffalo Supports, Traffic Safety Products, Rooftop Support Systems and Systems Installation & Design. The company maintains headquarters at its original location on Sycamore Street, now greatly expanded, and serves markets across the Northeast.
